Dog Sledding in Tromsø: Drive Yourself or Ride Along – Which Tour?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 6 min read
For most visitors, book the Self-Drive Husky Dog Sledding Adventure: €313.53 per person, four hours door to door, 4.9 stars from 4,410 reviews, and a trail the listing puts at 70 to 80 minutes. If you would rather not steer: the Guided Husky Sledding with Traditional Lunch puts you in a sled driven by a guide, at €317.28. For a cheaper first taste: the Husky Experience with Self-Drive Dog Sled Ride is €204.97, but the sled ride itself is short.
Dog sledding is one of the pricier things to do from Tromsø, and the price tells you little about how long you are actually on the sled. That is the number to compare.

Self-drive is shared, and it is short
On every “self-drive” tour here you share a sled with one other person. One stands at the back and steers, the other sits, and you swap halfway. So you spend only part of the time on the trail at the handlebar, and that part is a lot less than the four or six hours of the tour.
The long trail at €313.53 is 70–80 minutes in total, and the listing says you take turns. The Tromsø Villmarkssenter tour at €317.28 gives about 45 minutes in a shared sled. The cheapest self-drive option states 10–15 minutes of driving, a stop for photos, then another 10–15 minutes back to camp. The booking page is open about it, and the tour costs about a third less than the long trail.
Driving or riding: the same price at the top
The ride-along tour at €317.28 costs the same as the self-drive tour from the same operator. You are paying for the day, the transport and the lunch, not for the steering. If one of you does not want to drive, the passenger tour is no cheaper, so choose it for comfort rather than for price.
The passenger tour has fewer restrictions. Its page says it is suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness, with children accompanied by an adult, and it asks you to note the children’s ages and weights when booking. If you travel with small children, bring your own child seat or arrange your own transport, because the operator does not guarantee child seats on its bus.
Age limits and fitness
The self-drive tours turn people away more than their titles suggest. According to the booking pages:
- the 70–80 minute tour lists children under 7, pregnant women and people with back problems or low fitness as not suitable, and the Breivikeidet tour at €270.48 lists children under 7, pregnant women and people with mobility impairments;
- the 45-minute tour at €317.28 sets a minimum age of 16, with 70 as the maximum recommended age;
- the advanced Camp Tamok tour at €240.34 lists children under 16 as not suitable, with a weight limit of 120 kg;
- the Dog Sledding Experience with Transfer at €209.93, a 3–4 km trail from Breivikeidet, lists children under 4 as not suitable;
- the self-drive tour at €313.53 states a limit of 170 kg per sled for two people.
Wheelchair users are listed as not suitable on several of these tours. Do not rely on a title: open the listing and read the “not suitable for” line.
The transport takes longer than the sledding
Every tour here leaves from the centre and drives to a camp: about 30 minutes to the Kvaløya kennel, 50 minutes to Breivikeidet, 25 minutes each way for the Villmarkssenter camp, and 90 minutesto Tamokdalen. The Camp Tamok tour at €240.34 is the most demanding: the listing calls it physically active and advanced, with a group limit of 12, and it takes 6.5 hours including a 90-minute bus ride each way. It suits fit, adventurous guests, not a first-timer who wants a gentle ride.
What to skip
If a husky camp visit is what you want and the sledding is secondary, the Northern Lights Husky Visit with Traditional Dinner at €167.53 is a camp visit with dinner by the fire, aimed at all ages. Check the listing before booking, because the description does not promise a sled ride. For more options by price and duration, see all dog sledding tours from Tromsø.
How to choose
Book the €313.53 self-drive tour if you want a proper ride and you can drive. Book the €204.97 version if you want the experience at a lower price and accept a short ride. Book the €317.28 guided passenger ride if someone in your party cannot or does not want to steer. If the evening sky matters as much as the dogs, our comparison of Northern Lights tours by bus, minibus or small group shows what else the night can hold.
